How to Apologize Over Text (Without Making It Worse)

The four-part apology formula that actually repairs the relationship — instead of starting another fight.

A bad apology over text is one of the most damaging things you can send. 'Sorry you feel that way' isn't an apology — it's a deflection. Here's how to do it right.

1. Name what you did, specifically

'I'm sorry I snapped at you when you brought up the weekend.' Not 'I'm sorry for whatever upset you.' Vague apologies feel like avoidance. Specific apologies feel like accountability.

2. Acknowledge the impact

'I know that made you feel dismissed' or 'I can see why that felt like I wasn't listening.' This is where most apologies fail — people skip straight to defense. Sit in their experience for a second first.

3. Don't add 'but'

The word 'but' erases everything before it. 'I'm sorry I yelled, but you also...' is not an apology, it's an attack with a softer opener. Cut it.

4. Say what you'll do differently

'Next time I'll take a beat before I respond.' This is the part that turns the apology from words into a commitment.

Bonus: don't expect immediate forgiveness

An apology is something you offer, not a transaction. Send it, then give them space to receive it.
